As the 40th anniversary of THE BIG BOSS is going to be on 30th October this year(2011) I thought would I do a review in honour of the films 40th, though this movie may have dated over the pass 40 years it's influence has shape the Martial Art Genre over this time & will continue to do so... Without this film the world of Martial Arts cinema just wouldn't be the same. The main reason for this effect has to be the fact it's Bruce Lee's first Martial Art film.
Bruce Lee plays Cheng Chiu On a Chinese man who came to work in Thailand at an ice factory & stays with relatives & co-workers but the factory isn't quite as it first seems some of the works start to disappear two of which had scene what was in the ice. After the disappearances the works get annoyed with the Factory manager played Chan Chue so the workers go on strike & a fight breaks out between the foreman & other high positioned workers Cheng doesn't get involved for a while because of a promise he made to his mother not fight that he swore on a jade necklace but after the necklace breaks he explodes with fury & fights with techniques way ahead anything of the time in terms of film even though all he uses are a few simple techniques its just the way Bruce Lee does it that make it special. Before the ice factory we did get to see some fights from James Tien as Hsu Chien, who was the original lead before Bruce would have remained the lead if Bruce hadn't been any good but Bruce becomes pretty much the full lead half way through. These fights with James where in the usual early 70's basher style being more regarded & Karate like than Bruce's this was because the main Action Director was Han Ying-Chieh who also played 'THE BIG BOSS' Boss Mi but fortunately many of Bruce's fights where choreographed but also some where fights are ruined by the fact they keep it basher like with high jumping tricks with help from trampolines, one of these ended up which injuring Bruce's left leg so he did the final with the injured leg also some of the high jumping ended up with Bruce being doubled by Yuen Wah who would double Bruce for his other films when acrobatics where used. Also in the final fight Bruce fort his opponent on the ground using philosophy of his Jeet Kuen Do of using all rangers of combat which was not offend scene at the time on screen nor in the Martial Arts world.
